Based on a true story, Nelly Don celebrates the American entrepreneurial experience through an improbable heroine whose life mission was to champion the beauty of women through fashion. Nelly Don's creative genius and personal travails form the musical narrative of the story behind the woman who started the largest dress design and manufacturing company the world has ever known. The musical spans Nell’s life from young girl to successful business executive and finally as the “grand dame” of daytime fashion. All throughout “the Donnettes,” a delightful bunch of ladies accompanies Nell on her musical journey as she’s finds young love, suffers the pains of love lost and rediscovers her purpose in life as a mother, the result of a taboo relationship. In the middle of it all is Nelly Don's chauffeur and close confidante, George Blair, who falls victim with Nell to an abduction and is held ransom. Nell’s late in life paramour, the distinguished Senator from Missouri James A. Reed, threatens the local mob boss, Johnny Lazia, that he had better rescue Nell or else! There’s fashion, glamour and humor all against the backdrop of gorgeous fashions with all new musical compositions. And the best part is IT ALL REALLY HAPPENED right here in Kansas City!
